The Lafayette Lancers opened their tournament this evening with two matches. In the first game, #10 ranked Ft Zumwalt West scored five goals to get past Parkway South who had two of their own. In the nightcap, the Lancers came out sluggish and while they controlled the majority of play, never effectively challenged the West goal keeper in the first half.
As halftime talks sometimes will do, the Lafayette squad came out more energized and began to attack the goal, pushing eight men forward quite often. They finally broke through in the 63rd minute, when following a corner kick, a ball fell to junior Jacob Enright near the top of the box and his blast richoted off the underside of the crossbar for what proved to be the game-winner. A second goal was scored by junior Sean Butler when he broke in on the goalkeeper on a ball that was sent over the top of the defense. His shot to the right corner slipped by the onrushing goalkeeper in stoppage time for the final margin (celebrating above)
Ft Zumwalt West will face off against Parkway West on Tuesday while Lafayette will take on Parkway South, coached by Hall of Famer Al Trost. On Wednesday Parkway South and West will face off before Ft Zumwalt West takes on Lafayette, likely for bragging rights in this round robin event.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday here in Springfield we’ll be keeping an eye on the Missouri State defense and their efforts to shut down Creighton Blue Jay Tim Walters, a 2005 graduate of Lafayette and son of Lafayette coach Tim Walters.
