JB Marine Springfield Update

In a continuing series on Club Soccer, Lindsay Paulsell has contributed the following summary of the previous year and what the girls teams at JB Marine – Springfield have to look forward to with the start of the Fall season.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++
U15 Girls Soccer:

Throughout the 2005-06 season, the JB Marine 92 girls team traveled to several tournaments both in the state of Missouri and out-of-state. We played in the Fall LCS U-14 Boys league to satisfy requirements for State Cup showing well against local boys teams. We also played several friendly games against local and St. Louis girls teams.

On the Tournament front, we were finalists in the Broken Arrow Soccer Club Labor Day Invitational and the Columbia Pride Spring Invitational tournament. The losses came on a breakaway in the final minutes and the other in penalty kicks. We were Champions in the Jefferson City Fall Finale.

We entered the Missouri State Cup, drawing three St. Louis teams. Tough play led to two ties and a 1-0 loss to the 3-time defending state champions, St. Louis SC-Lange. After a very competitive showing in Cup, we are now ranked 12th in the state in our age bracket.

Looking towards the 2006-07 season, our goals as a compeitive program are to continue to develop our players in both skill and knowledge of the game and to shift more focus to giving girls exposure to as many college coaches at showcase tournaments as possible. We have decided to pass on State Cup this year and add more college showcases as the players are reaching the recruitable age. We kicked off the season with the Broken Arrow Invitational over Labor Day Weekend coming home with a 1st place finish. We looking towards competing in the Springfield Fall Classic in October and the Metro United Showcase and TSC Showcase in November.

U19 Girls Soccer:
Entering the 2006-07 season, JB Marine-Springfield 88 girls have a new look. Graduating numerous seniors the previous year, we have added to the four returning players with six players from the former 89 girls team and added four newcomers from around the Springfield area.

The 88 girls team fared well in the Fall 2005 season losing in PK’s at the Jeff City Fall Finale and winning all three games at the TSC Showcase in November. Looking towards the 2006-07 season, we have some rebuilding to do, as we are a mix of 3 age groupings, but return with a strong base of players including local standouts Melissa Hogan (Ozark), Jessica Yach (Nixa), Regina Bodine (Willard) and newcomer in goal, Christina Ogden (Catholic). The focus for the Fall is to expose our players to the college circuit via showcases and hopefully getting some interest at the next level.

We spent Labor Day Weekend in Broken Arrow splitting 2-2, beating Tulsa Thunder and WSA and losing to two strong Hurricane teams. Next up is the Springfield Fall Classic.

Note about State Cup: Both the 88 and 92 girls competed in the 2006 State Cup this past June faring well against their opponents. Due to the new format, we have decided not to participate in Cup this year feeling that teams need more preparation time (ie. leagues and other sport commitments) and the committment of three weekends is too much. Plus the single elimination format with the blind draw seems to defeat the purpose of showcasing state talent
