Blue Jays Open With Win Over Bulldogs

Greenwood Blue Jays vs Central BulldogsThe Greenwood Blue Jays played host to the Central Bulldogs at Cooper Soccer Complex Tuesday evening. The Bulldogs got off to an excellent start when in the third minute sophomore captain Miguel x was pulled down in the box, earning a PK for Central and a red card for Miles Barnhart. X Villanueva put the PK past Rutger Thieme, who got a foot on the ball but was unable to stop it.

The Blue Jays, despite playing a man down for the remainder of the match, came back strongly with five goals in the first half. Sophomore Matt Cook, moved up to an outside midfield position from his defensive role last year, got the first two on fine runs down the left side and into the box. His brother Brad scored on a similar play down the right side while senior captain Ross Chaffin got two in the first and one in the second to complete the scoring in Greenwood’s 6-1 win.

Central solidified their defense and made a number of runs into the box in the second half but were unable to connect on a second goal in this outing. The Bulldogs are very young but showed well, come out hard in the second half to try and narrow the margin. The communication and ideas were there, execution will be the next challenge.
