“Don’t take the Parkview Vikings lightly” is the message I came away with this evening as the local boys took out District 9 challenger Jefferson City Friday. Parkview scored first, from Tim Brooks (pictured), and took a 1 – 0 lead into the second half. The Vikings continued to go forward consistently, seeing several opportunities go for naught as the defense caught up to the challenge, including one save on Matt Medleys shot from the left side that keeper Taylor Webb just kept out.
They broke through for a second in the 56th minute when, following a speculative long ball, midfielder Tom Marlowe pounced on the loose ball in the offensive end and after drawing two defenders deftly dished it off to Tim Griffin on the right. Tim’s cross to the top of the 6 yard box found Joey Ekstam who nodded it down to the far corner for a 2 – 0 lead. As noted by my companion on the sideline, a difficult lead to hold.
Cameron Schulte salvaged some pride for the Jays in the 66th minute when he came up from his defensive position to receive a square pass. His shot was misjudged by the keeper and ended up sliding into the side netting for the final margin. The Jays are now 0-2 after losing 1-0 to a Quincy Notre Dame team they dominated in every way except the score.
Parkview – 2
Jefferson City – 1
Waynesville – 10
