From the Joplin Daily Globe when practices started

Just down the hill from Joplin’s football practice field, Ed Miller’s boys soccer team endured a three-and-a-half hour workout. The soccer team’s practice wrapped up at 11:30 a.m., before the blazing heat even reached 90 degrees.

Still, Miller wanted his players to drink heavily and stretch properly after practice. Needing to replace 12 graduated seniors from a team that went 17-8-1, Miller doesn’t want to see anyone get injured.

“We had to weeks of camp in late July, so these guys are in pretty good shape,” Miller said. “We’re still in the feeling out stages, so this is a great time for the young players to step up.”
