The US Youth Soccer National Championship Series begins today in Des Moines IA. With age group champions from each of the four Regions pursuing their dreams of a national championship, Springfield and Missouri have one representative this year.
Tyler Williams, Kickapoo 2007, is a member of the Scott Gallagher U17 boys squad took Region 2 honors last month in Wisconsin, defeating the Chicago Magic 1-0 on a late goal from Mychel Jones.
The road does not get easier with an opening round match this evening at 7pm against Bethesda United (MD). The boys will face Solar 89 SC (TX) on Thursday at 12:30 pm and Arsenal FC (CA) on Friday at 8:30 am. The Championship game between the top two finishers will Sunday.
The draw was favorable for our boys with their final match being Arsenal FC. Arsenal are the defending champions, having won the title as U15’s and U16’s. If they can win this year, they will join Central Valley Mercury with three straight national titles. Here are the most recent streaks since 1996:
Central Valley Mercury | 1996-1998 (Under-16 – Under-18)
Colorado Rush Nike | 2000-2001 (Under-18 – Under-19)
Eclipse Select | 2004-2005 (Under-16 – Under-17)
Texans ‘82/83 | 2001-2002 (Under-18 – Under-19)

Good luck to Tyler and his Missouri teammates!
