Southwest Soccer All Stars

Congratulations to the Red squad as they held on to defeat Gold by a score of 4-2 this evening.

Karissa Nedoma, Kickapoo Chiefs and Drury Panthers signee, took home MVP honors for her offensive prowess for the Gold squad. Mattie Donnell, Ozark Tigers, took home MVP honors for her defensive effort in goal for the Red squad.

Team photos are available by clicking on the photo above of Brittany Cobb (Nixa Eagles) attempting to move around Ashley Gregg (Lebanon Yellowjackets) . More photos will be available by Saturday.

The doubleheader will be broadcast on Mediacom Channel 14 on Saturday beginning at 12:30 pm and will be repeated again on Sunday at 4:00 pm. In addition, the Girls game only will be re-broadcast on Monday at 8:30 pm.

Simone Young, Ozark Tigers and the Red squad, opened the scoring in the 27th min with her blast from 30 yards out in the first half. The opportunity came when Jordan Swift, Catholic, pushed a ball back from inside the box. Simone touched it down in front and put her ball into the upper 90 over the goalkeepers hands.

Both teams came out strong in the second half with Red scoring first, when in the 56th minute Mikenna Wick (Willard) took a pass on the left side and turned the corner on her defender. Her shot from just outside the box went to the far side just inside the upright in the upper 90. The opportunity came following the hard work of x to keep possession in the corner before the outlet pass found Mikenna.

Red extended their lead to 3-1 in the 65th minute when Caitlin Germeroth took a ball down the left side and cut into the box, putting her shot into the same upper right corner as Mikenna.

Gold pulled within one again when a trio of Kickapoo Chiefs combined to score in the 69th minute. Some hard work by Afton Weimer along the right sideline allowed her to maintain possession in the defensive third and her long ball down the right wing was corralled by Karissa Nedoma. Her run to the right corner was followed by a beautiful cross to the penalty spot. Jackie Sabel went up in the air to settle the ball on her thigh and quickly turned on the ball to put it into the right corner before the defense could react.

Red was not finished however. Continuing the attacking soccer that was the hallmark of this first Girls All-Star match, the visitors earned a corner kick in stoppage time. Brooke Lawrence’s kick was deflected by the goalkeeper only to see Jenny Melton (Camdenton) run onto the loose ball in the six yard box and bury it into the roof of the net before two defenders could react.

In red is Ashley Gregg (Lebanon).
And I’m pretty sure it was 4-2 Red.
What a great group of girls we had on the Reds. They were really motivated! All you coaches out there who had these girls on your HS team were fortunate. They all had great attitudes and I was impressed with how quickly they learned the names of girls that some had just met that day for the first time. They were all supportive of each other and they made it fun. Thanks ladies.

Thanks SSC and sgfsoccer for hosting this event. Perhaps the 3rd year will be the charm for weather. Although it did turn out to be a fantastic night for soccer in the Ozarks.
