World Cup Update

There were 30 folks who showed up for the game on Saturday afternoon at the Fox & Hound. Nice turnout, decent game (we got a point) and there was even a contingent of Italian fans wearing the blue of the Azuri to ensure there was some flava’ to the event. Of course, that pales with the 400 (you read that right) folks who showed up for Monday’s US game at the Fox & Hound. According to Christa Lane, a great Events Coordinator who is still learning ‘the beautiful game’, a group called “Scott Gallagher” showed up. Nice.

Under the classification of “Do the Right Thing”, media mogul Rupert Murdoch is working to ensure that US troops overseas have access to the World Cup matches in Iraq & Afghanistan. From the same article comes news on TV ratings for the games -

RATINGS SOAR ESPN2’s World Cup ratings through Monday were averaging 1.75 million viewers a game, up 206 percent from 2002, when all the games were played in South Korea and Japan (early in the morning Eastern time). At Univision, average viewership of 2.5 million is up 186 percent from four years ago. Univision said that it has averaged 575,000 more viewers than ESPN2 in the five games through Sunday in which the networks competed head to head.

ABC’s games on Saturday produced overnight ratings of 2.7 for England versus Paraguay and 2.9 for Trinidad and Tobago against Sweden, compared with a 1.4 for one game on the comparable day in 2002. Sunday’s Mexico-Iran game generated a 2.7 rating, up 42 percent from the Sweden-England broadcast in 2002.
