Missouri State Cup – Day 5

Springfield SC vs Scott Gallagher (U15)

Big day at Lake Country on Wednesday as Springfield SC had two teams advance to the semifinals, the U15 and U16 boys. The luck of the draw meant that both faced off against Scott Gallagher SC.

In the early game, the U15′s played their game and took it to the boys in yellow. The local boys had the first good opportunity and the last good opportunity, on a shot from Bryce Collier that looked certain to go in until cleared off the line late in the second OT period (click on the picture to see two photos). In between both teams hit the crossbar, with SSC going first as pictured above. The best definition came from a Gallagher coach, overheard from the press box late in regulation, to a midfield substitute. “We are losing this game in the midfield, get in there and take control”. While true, it doesn’t reflect the quality of play the team provided as they bought into the system taught to them by the Springfield SC staff and that they played at the highest level. The final result was 1-0 for Scott Gallagher, on a corner kick that was not cleared.

The late game for the U16′s was a rematch of the semifinal played between these two teams as U15′s. Last years game was 1-4 to Gallagher and was a learning experience for the team and the club. With a team that was rebuilt due to changes in the team, the final result at 1-4 was well deserved but doesn’t reflect the strides this squad made. The Scott Gallagher squad has some of the best talent in the region, including Will Bruin, So forward for DeSmet and 2nd team All Metro, along with Tommy Meyer, U16 national pool player.

A shout out goes to Chealsey Russell (Kickapoo 2008) and her St. Louis SC teammates who repeated as the U16 girls State Champions. This sends the girls to the Regionals where they will hope to repeat their run as National Champions. If you’d like to congratulate her personally, I’m guessing you’ll find her at Lake Country tomorrow at 3:00 pm where she’ll be cheering on her brother Skyler who will be playing in the U14 boys final for Scott Gallagher.

In addition, Tyler Williams will be playing in the U17 boys final with Scott Gallagher, after winning their semifinal match against Lou Fusz SC. The Lou Fusz team included two of his Kickapoo teammates, Alex Palmer and Adam Peterson, who recently wrote about his experiences traveling to St. Louis and representing Lou Fusz as well as Springfield Soccer.
