As noted earlier, the Kickapoo Chiefs were beaten 2-1 Saturday by the Lafayette Lancers (Wildwood, MO or West County to the locals). With record breaking heat under blue skies, the game would put a premium on team depth and patience. The game winner came in the 20th minute from senior Meg O’Connell, her second in two games, on a beautiful shot to the far post from the left side of the box. After Lafayette maintained possession in the offensive third following an earlier attack, senior defender Lindsey Aufricht sent a short pass over the top of the defense, allowing forward Melissa Lantz to move into the box with the ball. Her cross was knocked down and the Chiefs clearance came out to Meg who one-timed her shot to the far post where it settled into the back corner of the net for the important first goal, and the lead.

The Lancers scored a second midway through the second half when sophomore Emily Leeker was sent into the box down the right side. Her shot went just under the on-rushing keeper and gave Lafayette the margin they needed to absorb the final Kickapoo attack. The final goal of the game, and the Chief’s season, came via a familiar route. Sophomore Jessica McCutcheon’s punt was flicked forward by senior captain Afton Weimer. Freshman forward Jessica Roberts came back to win a contested header that fell to sophomore midfielder Katy McLain. Katy beat her defender and made a run down the left side, sending a beautiful cross into the box where Jessica’s run drew the defender. Chealsey Russell beat the goalkeeper to the ball and one timed it into the near corner as the clock stopped at 2:00 min remaining.

Congratulations to the Lafayette Lancers on their win as they head to the Final Four next weekend (no golf for Coach for another week). For the Kickapoo Chiefs, Coach Davidson has agreed to provide a season wrap up for the readers of Springfield Soccer. Look for it Tuesday. And thanks for a season to remember ladies.
