The Springfield Catholic Fightin’ Irish had a big fight on their hands with a young, fast Union squad, requiring a goal five minutes into overtime from Tara Bailes in order to reach the Class 1 Quarterfinals for the fourth year in a row this evening.
Union struck first in the match when x, after making a strong run down the right, found her teammate in the box to take the lead. Catholic was able to equalize in the 23rd minute in a fashion familiar to their fans – corner kick from Elle Holtman to Tara Bailes.
It remained knotted at 1-1 until 18 minutes into the second half, when Anna Delong was sprung by Catherine DiSarno’s ball, her breakaway goal giving Catholic their first lead of the game at 2-1. Unfortunately for the Irish, Union turned right around to tie the game on a set piece of their own only two minutes later. It took overtime, and Alicia Tonjuk’s ability to receive the ball with her back to the goal at the top of the box and deliver a square ball to Tara, to make the difference in the match. Tara beat one defender and her shot to the lower left hand side went into the goal and the side netting. 3-2 Catholic, who move on to face either Hannibal or Timberland.
According to Coach Ben Timson, Tara has now played in four overtime games in her young career. She has scored the game winning goal in three of them, the lone disappointment coming at the hands of Visitation Academy when they lost 30 seconds into OT.
The Quarterfinal match will be played at 1:00 pm on Saturday at 179 Soccer Park in Jefferson City. Springfield Catholic will face Timberland (Wentzville) in a rematch of last years Quarterfinal game. Timberland advanced by way of their 3-2 win in the 2nd overtime period over Hannibal.
