The boys are coached by former Missouri State University Coach, Jan Stahle, ably assisted by Brian Murray who is responsible for Player Development at Lake Country Soccer. The trip is also sponsored by the Springfield-Greene County Park Board and Lake Country Soccer. The boys will be gone June 28 through Monday, July 3, 2006. During the trip, the team will play a series of four games with Club Atlas, the premiere youth team in the Guadalajara area. In addition to competitive soccer, participants also will enjoy a series of cultural and educational opportunities offered through the Sister Cities Exchange Program.
With their arrival coinciding with the completion of the first round of the World Cup on June 23rd, the boys may find either a raucous national celebration or … well, we won’t go there for the sake of our Regional competitor. In actuality, the odds are good that Mexico will go through with Group D including Iran, Angola and Portugal. Only Portugal can match Mexico’s record of underachievement in the World Cup yet both squads are likely to advance. First place in their group, probably determined June 21st during their game against Portugal, will earn Mexico a match on June 25th, a second place finish in their group will lead to a game on June 24th. So, to help the boys in their acclimitization, here is Mexico’s schedule:
Sat 5/27 France 14:00 CT Friendly
Thu 6/1 Netherlands 13:00 CT Friendly
These two games will be played in Europe as the team gets used to the conditions in Europe. The World Cup schedule is as follows:
Sun. 11 @ 11:00 CT Mexico v Iran
Fri. 16 @ 14:00 CT Mexico v Angola
Wed. 21 @ 09:00 CT Portugal v Mexico
I’ll have to add these games to the Calendar I maintain of important games as well. Viva la Mexico!
PS - if you have information on either middle school or club representation for any of these boys, I’d be interested in knowing about it. For future reference.
