Missouri State Ties Missouri

Spring season games for our local college squads don’t get a lot of visibility as they are often simple opportunities to try some new things. They can also be affected by a shortage of players, due to graduation or injury. However, since the Lady Bears primary opportunity to compete against in-state rival Missouri happens only in the spring, you know the emotions will be high.

The teams got together at Liberty High School in the Kansas City area on Friday evening as part of a doubleheader with a high school game and put on a show. CSTV provides their view on the game, which ended at 1-1. They credited the goal incorrectly however. Here’s what the Missouri State staff offered:

The Missouri State University Bears played the University of Missouri Tigers to a 1-1 finish in Liberty on Friday. Following a scoreless 1st half, both teams managed to find the back of the net in a physical, tightly contested match. In the opening half the Tigers put high pressure on the MSU defense only to see it hold repeatedly. The Bears put together a few good runs to get in behind the Mizzou defenders, but failed to connect on scoring chances. Missouri continued it’s attacking style, however MVC Defender of the Year Kate Hercules played to form and the score remained 0-0 at the half.

The 2nd frame saw the Bears come out strong only to be down 1-0 early. A mismatch on the left side was too much and Missouri placed a low driven shot to take the lead. Missouri State’s hard style of defending, led by sophomore Lauren Heck, began to find success by creating several chances behind the Tiger backs. Chelsea Anderson took a poorly played pass and went straight to goal only to have her shot bounce off the post. However, freshman Jenna Laughlin was there to put it away to make things even. MSU had another chance late in the game when Kate Blair took a shot from the top of the area but was tripped up by the MU defender.

Missouri State thus tied both SLU and Mizzou this year in games that were physical and emotionally charged. You have to love in-state derbys! The ladies will wrap up their season this Saturday with an Alumni match at Cooper beginning at 1pm.
