Purple Wave Swamps Vikings

Camdenton Lakers at Parkview Vikings

The Camdenton Lady Lakers came to town Thursday to play the Parkview Vikings and much like their counterparts on the football squad, went straight at the hosts. The first half was a tight contest, as both squads showed growth in their games from earlier in the season. Each team understood what they wanted to accomplish and went about it in steady fashion with opportunities for both sides. It was only a strong run by Jenny Melton in the 34th minute, taking a ball that was switched to the left side that she was able to pick up with space in front of her, that gave the Lakers a 1-0 lead at the half.

The second half was a different story. Coach JD Hunter, already planning for the 3 games ahead at the Lebanon tournament this weekend, had a bench of eight motivated players anticipating minutes. Coming out quickly, the Lakers scored two quick goals in the 45th and 47th minutes. Jenny got her second, taking a diagonal pass from Haylie Christiansen that put her in on the keeper alone. Alisha Morice scored directly from her corner kick and the floodgates were leaking. Haylie Christiansen, a player whose direct play Coach Baker at Drury complimented during the Kickapoo match, broke through on a ball from Chelsea Williams to take the score to 4-0 in the 49th minute. Blair Baker, coming up from her midfield position, scored her first of the seaons in the 67th, assist to Haylie. Haylie closed out the scoring in 77th minute, again combining with Williams for the final score of 6-0.

As I noted at the beginning, I was impressed with the Vikings ball movement and teamwork in the first half. The second half was a challenge they didn’t back down from and they got into the Lakers box several times. With seniors Rachelle Washburn, Catalina Montengro, Jessica Saviello and Laura Robb providing leadership and a group of sophomores led by Liz Carney and Kristine Malter doing yeoman’s work, the ladies have shown me a lot of improvement. I’m looking for some attitude next :)
