Philip Batson of the Columbia Daily Tribune took some time on Sunday to evaluate the state of soccer in Central Missouri, or more specifically Columbia, and offers some good insight into the process and issues involved.
I like his analysis and know that from my conversations with the soccer die-hards here in town, a critical level that Springfield needs to reach is the development of a soccer culture in Springfield. That means many things but one point that Steve Pecher, Executive Director of St. Louis SC, makes in the article is the number of players who have come back to help in the on-going development of the future generations. That is an area where we are beginning to see growth. I’m going to have to explore that further. If you have names leave a comment and point me in the direction of some of the men and women who are former HS players from Springfield.
There are other components. One is being addressed. The “Half Pint Irish Social Club” will open later this year downtown, and it will be showing only soccer, rugby and other games of the ‘old country’ on the TV screens, as well as offering other amenities ![]()

OK the ‘Half Pint Irish Social Club’ thing. When you say “games of the ‘old country’” does that mean it will be Irish League soccer? Because that would hardly draw a crowd.
How about ‘hurling’?
