McAuley Catholic Drops Boys Soccer

From today’s Joplin Globe:

McAuley Catholic, which fielded the first varsity boys soccer team in the area, won’t have a squad next season.

School administrators cut the sport because of the declining numbers of participants. Last year, 14 played soccer, three of which were seniors.

“We just don’t have the numbers to field a team,” said athletics director Jonathan Wengert.

AD Wengert indicated in the article that the Girls team is not affected and they will be playing this Spring. He also indicated that he did not feel that football was negatively affected by soccer which is the reason I have heard that Branson will not field a soccer team. There is also some excellent background on McAuley’s success in the region and the state the late 80’s when they were the first program in Joplin.

Here’s hoping they can get the numbers up and return.

McAuley soccer was the first program in the Joplin area. They had some really good teams. It is a real shame that it is ending like that. The McAuley football team did win districts, but the district that they were in really sucked. The two losses that the team had were blow-outs. They are not that good of a team. But back to McAuley soccer, just in the 2004 season they were district runner-up. But this last season was a tough one for the Warriors. The only two good players on the team was Cole Moss and Justin Walters. They scored all the goals for Mcauley. They had nothing to work with. They had a goalie that was scared of the ball and they had two young coaches that did not know how to coach. Cole and Justin are two hard workers and great players, and it was a shame to see what they had to put up with.
