Missouri State Ice Bears

MSU Ice Bears vs Mizzou

I pointed to them late last month and I finally made it out Saturday evening for the final home game of the season. Sure wish I’d made it out sooner. I know my Dad and I are going to be certain to catch plenty of games next year. The Jordan Valley Ice Rink was rocking last night with a standing room only crowd and a game that exceeded 75 shots on goal. The Ice Bears came back in the final two minutes to tie the score at 3-3 and almost went home with a sudden death win as they attacked relentlessly during that five minute period. I’ve got to give Coach John Benjamin Alexander credit, he and his boys were not going to settle for a tie. I also got to meet an Olympic Gold Medal winner who earned gold on the US Women’s hockey team in 1998 in Nagano Japan. I screwed up not getting a picture of her with Coach Alexander. Maybe next year. And if you want to really enjoy the Winter Olympics, there are THREE High Definition TV’s set up in the lounge area at Jordan Valley along with a 20 foot screen in one of the ice rinks.

Good luck to the boys as they head to Geneva, IL (far northern suburb of Chicago) next weekend for the ACHA Central Region playoffs. Eight teams will be battling for two spots in the Division II National Tournament. Go Bears! The games will be broadcast via WebSportsRadio, check ‘em out.

Nice photos of the Bears. Your whites are exceptional. What do you shoot with at Jordan Valley and what settings do you use? Do you do a lot of post production production of the rink photos you take? If so, what program do you use?

(I have a Canon 30D with a 70-200mm f2.8 telephoto. I keep the f stop set at 2.8, goose the ISO to 1200, and set the white balance to fluorescent lighting with a color temp, i believe of about 5200K. )

Zeke - I use a Nikon D70. These photos were shot with the standard kit zoom, usually at 70mm, f4.5, ISO 1600. I’ve been using Google’s Picasa to handle the volume of photos I shoot in-season and the only modifications I’ll make will be cropping and contrast generally. You can see more details as Flickr provides the EXIF data if it’s available. Choose an individual photo and scroll down, on the right you’ll see a link for “more properties”.
