Yeah, that’s right, the Webster University Gorlocks. In the category of “It’s better to be lucky then good” I ended up catching the Washington University Bear’s in a non-conference match against a local rival tonight. The result, 7-0, was determined in a two minute span when the Bears scored in the 30th and 31st minute. The best part of the game came in the 75th minute when local favorite Joshua Florez took his spot in the defensive midfield, wearing jersey 29.
I talked to Coach Joey Clarke following the match and asked about Josh and the response was very positive, both with Josh’s first opportunity to get some minutes on a talented team that has faced a string of very tight games and more importantly, the future. He specifically commented on Josh’s athleticism and the great attitude he brings to the game. In fact, it was halftime before I could pick out Josh and the first hint of recognition was when I saw him smiling and joking with his teammates during warmups. He’s sporting a full head of curls and a college beard that made it hard to find him initially.
I talked to Josh about his experiences so far and he loves Washington University which I’m glad to hear – I pointed him in that direction via an alumni recommendation program they have in place. He made the traveling team at the beginning of the season but an early injury set him back. Tonight’s playing time is a step in the right direction and Josh hopes to be on the plane for the East Coast trip this weekend and to Chicago for the final match of the season against Chicago November 5th.
I have video of his first outing although it’s lacking highlights, simply solid tackles, winning a couple of headers and a great diagonal ball from midfield to a winger in the corner that led to a shot on goal. Something only a mother would love (call me Debbie 🙂 ) We’ll look forward to more in the days and years to come.
