As Pope Benedict XVI was being inagurated in Rome this weekend, our local Fighting Irish were overcoming the odds and their number seven seeding to win the Championship of the Capital City Soccer Classic. As mentioned earlier, the Lady Irish knocked off the #11 ranked Rolla Bullodgs (Class II) on Friday evening in the opener of this tournament played at the 179 Soccer Park facility. From the Scoreboard section of today’s News-Leader are the following match stats:
Alicia Tonjuk scored in the second half, assisted by Shannon FitzGerald, providing the winning margin in a 1 – 0 shutout of Jefferson City in the semifinal match.
Shannon FitzGeral scored the winning goal in the final, assisted by Tara Bailes, who scored the winning goal against Rolla on Friday night. Shannon’s goal came in the second half after Lee’s Summit had scored to tie the game earlier in the half. Catholic initially took the lead in the match on a penalty kick in the first half. Alli Bailes, a junior, handled the successful PK .
The Lady Irish were ranked second in the state in Class I when the first coaches poll came out on April 6th. Duchesne, St. Dominic and Catholic all received 42 votes in the poll, behind St. Pius (Festus) and their 45 votes. There were 19 teams who received votes in that initial poll. By the time the most recent poll was completed on April 20th, there were only 15 teams receiving votes and the order had changed as follows: 1) John Burroughs 2) St. Pius- Festus 3) Visitation Academy 4) Springfield Catholic and 5) St. Dominic. John Burroughs received 74 votes in the poll and Catholic 42 as in the earlier poll.
Catholic has a reputation for playing a difficult schedule, a choice that does not offer a gaudy W – L record but one that does prepare them for the rigors of the Class I playoffs. Taking on two state ranked Class II teams, and coming out on top, bode well for their opportunity June 3-4 in Fenton. I’ve got it marked on my calender!
Late addition – the Jefferson City News Tribune briefly mentions Catholic’s win while recapping the match up between Jefferson City & Jefferson City in the 3rd place game Saturday.
