From the Springfield News-Leader, the Catholic ‘Fighting Irish’ defeated Rolla yesterday in the opening match of the Jefferson City Capital Classic by the score of 3 – 0. Ranked seventh in the eight team field, Catholic pulled off the upset when Elle Holtman’s goal broke a scoreless tie in the second half on an assist from Tara Bailes. Tara is part of an extremely strong freshman class that are making their mark on the top teams in the area. I’ll have to explore that in further detail in a later post.
For now, the question is what this might do to both the State and Regional rankings. Both Kickapoo and Glendale have faced off against Catholic this year and both came away with 1-0 wins in tight games against the perennial Class I contender. However it is Rolla that is state-ranked in Class II although Kickapoo and Jefferson City received votes in the two most recent polls.
From the Jefferson City News-Tribune, the Jefferson City Jays defeated defeated Joplin 3 – 0. The win puts them into a semi-final matcch against Catholic today at 11am. The winner moves on to the Championship match later today.
